Larnaca, Cyprus
I bused into Larnaca to stay one night then fly into Nairobi, Kenya. It is a beach-front city on the south coast of Cyprus, with golden sand beaches, and interesting history. After dropping my bags in the hostel, I walked to the Larnaca Medieval Fort, the Finikoudes Beach and the promenade, the marina, the Church of St Lazarus, etc.
“It’s said that Saint Lazarus came to Cyprus after he was resurrected by Jesus, and he continued to live in Larnaca for the next 30 years. After his death, he was buried below the Church in the sanctuary.”
Then I walked south towards the salt lakes, the most important wetlands in Cyprus. In winter, tens of thousands of flamingos descend on the lakes. I walked 4 miles all the way to the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, then hitchhiked back to the hostel. The Mosque was constructed as a tribute to Umm Haram, the aunt of Prophet Mohammad, who fell off her mule and died.
