Nungwi (Zanzibar)


















 Day 7 – Nungwi (Zanzibar)

We left at 5:30 am for the short journey into Dar es Salaam this morning in order to board our ferry for the two hour trip to Zanzibar. Zanzibar is an island off the coast of Tanzania; it includes both Zanzibar and Pemba.

After arriving at the ferry port, we shuttled to Nungwi on the northern shores of the island. A few hundred f us enjoyed the nice and warm swim on the beautiful beaches right in front of the lodge. 

I did 10 lapses in the pool after the swimming, showed, did some laundry, and then joined the group for happy hours (ordered mango cocktail) in the lodge bar. We then had a wonderful dinner in the lodge under the sky on the lodge restaurant deck. I had local finish for dinner.

Bagamoyo

 Day 6 - Bagamoyo We headed out 5:30 am this morning as we journeyed south to our overnight stop in the coastal town of Bagamoyo. Formerly a centre point of the East African slave trade, Bagamoyo lies just north of the port of Dar es Salaam and is a perfect launching point for our upcoming Zanzibar Excursion. While today is primarily a travel day, we traveled via many small towns and mountains. Road travel in Africa is an experience in itself and the bustling markets, villages and scenic backdrops that line the routes give a window into the lifestyle of rural Africa. When our truck passed via the town, I got a glimpse of entrance portals of the homes which display intricate carvings with Arabic influence. View the aging German buildings. Church of the Holy Sepulchre

 After taking a nap and eating an early dinner, I decided to walk back to the old city to check out Church of the Holy Sepulchre which is not as busy after 6 pm. It is the most holy Christian spot in the world. Its history began in the fourth century, when the Bishop of the Christian community of Jerusalem discovered a tomb that has since become almost universally accepted as the burial place of Christ. I was still in a queue for an hour or more to enter the tiny tomb chamber.  Today, it is shared by several Christian denominations, including the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Armenian Apostolic churches.
