Utengule Coffee Lodge

















 Day 12 – Mbeya Region

The group had an early breakfast with packed lunch then we headed west. This afternoon we arrived at the biggest coffee plantation in Tanzania (Utengule Coffee Lodge) where toured the processing facilities of seeding, growing and harvesting coffee beans and sampled some of the coffee.

We slept at the Utengule Coffee Lodge in the plantation near a city in southwest Tanzania. It sits at the base of soaring Loleza Peak, between the Mbeya and Poroto mountain ranges. I got an upgrade to stay in a bungalow instead of camping. We had grilled lamp chops for dinner.

Arusha II

 Day 5 - Arusha We slept in today to have breakfast 7:30 am, and boarded our truck and returned to Arusha, the gateway to the popular Northern Safari Circuit. Upon arrival in Arusha, we stopped by the big supermarket to stock up meal materials, and I got Tanzania ginger soda (in lieu of local coke since they don’t have it), and most popular local beer: Kilimanjaro. I am not hiking it, but drinking it.  A lot of friends are hiking Kilimanjaro this coming summer, yet with that amount of money, I would rather hike 5 more times in Nepal. So far, I haven’t got the courage to step into a local market due to the risk of pickpockets. I will try at a safer area. In terms of food, our on-board chef already blended many African dishes in our dinners.

Bagamoyo

 Day 6 - Bagamoyo We headed out 5:30 am this morning as we journeyed south to our overnight stop in the coastal town of Bagamoyo. Formerly a centre point of the East African slave trade, Bagamoyo lies just north of the port of Dar es Salaam and is a perfect launching point for our upcoming Zanzibar Excursion. While today is primarily a travel day, we traveled via many small towns and mountains. Road travel in Africa is an experience in itself and the bustling markets, villages and scenic backdrops that line the routes give a window into the lifestyle of rural Africa. When our truck passed via the town, I got a glimpse of entrance portals of the homes which display intricate carvings with Arabic influence. View the aging German buildings. It was almost 6 pm when we arrived, so I did not check out the town. The coast is much more hot and humid, yet it is fall so the temperature cools down to 60sf (still ok to sleep in a tent).
