Swakopmund I

 Day 32 - Swakopmund I

We went directly to walk around the massive granite formations of the Spitzkoppe (from German for "pointed dome"; also referred to as the "Matterhorn of Namibia") is a group of bald granite peaks or inselbergs located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert of Namibia. Spitzkoppe tower 700 metres above the desert plains below and the presence of rock art indicates their significance to the San people who lived here many years ago. The granite is more than 120 million years old and the highest outcrop rises about 1,728 metres above sea level.

We viewed some examples of the San’s rock art and local guide’s demonstration of the clicking languages age before setting off for the seaside town of Swakopmund. Swakopmund is well known for its many adventure activities, coffee shops and rich German influence.

I walked at round town and showered before dinner, then I shopped at a supermarket for a beer and a soft soda. I picked one beer from South Africa, a bit too early. We also celebrated a group member’s birthday with a cake tonight.

We had lunch after the walk then headed to the lodge. Tonight everyone had a room to stay, including me.
