Etosha National Park II

Day 29 - Etosha National Park II

Etosha is the venue for some of the most unique game viewing experiences in Africa. Today we had a full-day to explore the edges of the Etosha Pan in search of the abundant wildlife in the park. Our truck gave us an elevated platform and we spent some time at many waterholes dotted throughout the park to wait for animals, including one rhino next to a group of eight elephants.

“Etosha National Park centres around the vast Etosha Pan, an extensive flat depression of 5,000 square metres of shimmering mirages and in the language of the local Owambo tribe Etosha means ‘place of dry water’. The park is home to the ‘big five’ - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino.“

Some of us ate the dinner buffet at the Camp restaurant to taste hake (shipped from South Africa) and kudu (freshly slaughtered). Hake has a sweet taste slightly more pronounced than cod. Like cod, hake is white and its skin flakes easily. Kudu is said to be the best tasting game meat in the world, it was tasty and tender. I went back to the camp site waterhole after dinner and two rhinos.
