South Luangwa II

Day 17  – South Luangwa II

I slept a lot during daytime drive, so I woke up early between 3-4 am.  South Luangwa National Park is a world-class safari destination and we has a full day to explore the park in search of the variety of wildlife found in the park. This morning, I took an optional walking safari (available only during the dry season April to December), the iconic walking safaris in Africa, where a trained guide and a gun guard took us waking via bushes and hippo highways and tracking animals — an altogether different experience.

I had a similar experience in Chiwon National Park in Nepal for Asian Rhino and other different animals. We saw a few animals up close, and identified the droppings of different animals.

I really like this park for its Concentrations of animals along the meandering Luangwa River and its lagoons are amongst the most intense in Africa. The river teems with hippo and crocodile, including the section behind our camp. I socked in the swimming pool and watching hippo in the river.

This afternoon we enjoyed a Sunset Drive in the park, and a sundowner on the way. I finally saw a leopard before dark, so the only animal left on my list is rhino.

This unique opportunity to explore the park at night was supposed to give us a chance to spot the elusive nocturnal species that are seen in the day, when high-powered spotlights were used to locate nocturnal animals like hyenas and civets, but we saw a lot of hippos instead. Then we came back to camp to have dinner.
